The
main strength of Harmergreen Wood is its simplicity. It is a place
for young people to come and get away from it all, to be creative
and to enjoy basic camping in unspoilt woodland. The site is entirely
wooded, apart from a few glades, and is surrounded by pleasant countryside.
Harmergreen Wood is a great place for people of all ages to learn
about and enjoy simple camping, It has proved particularly suitable
as a location for patrol camps, or for older scouts to bivouac and
learn backwoods skills.
A
44-acre area of ancient woodland with a number of cleared glades
for camping and is surrounded by pleasant countryside.
The main strength of this attractive campsite is its simplicity.
It is a place to come and get away from it all to be creative and
to enjoy basic camping in unspoilt woodland. Day visits for picnics,
nature study or woodland games.
Basic facilities (water, toilet and washing up – but no electricity
or showers) are to be found at the centre of the site at “Fort
William”. It is accessible for both hikers and vehicles –
although biking is not permitted through the woodland, and cars
must be left at the car parks. It is 1 mile north east of Welwyn
and within easy reach of railway and motorway services.

Leave
the M25 at Junction 23 and go North towards Hatfield on the Al(M).
Leave the A1(M) at Junction 6 for Welwyn.
Continue North via 3 roundabouts. At the “Clock" roundabout
take the B197 to Knebworth UNDER the Motorway. Continue for 1.5
miles (2.5km). Opposite the “North Star” turn right
into Lower Mardley Hill which runs into Robbery Bottom Lane.
Continue until you pass under the railway viaduct.
Turn immediately right through a gate and up the track, then into
the woodland. The main car park is at the far end of the track.
(Please close the gate after you).
Please drive carefully along Robbery Bottom Lane, which is residential
and frequently used by children and walkers.
